Gauge Nine : Insert : The Aborted Version
The paper dolls insert for Gauge Nine. This sheet was printed on heavy stock paper and has die perforated markings around the doll and her accessories – making it an interactive piece you can freely play around with. It's very funny in person to punch out the doll and mix outfits around. The illustrator did a wonderful job. My task was to knock out each piece from a scan I performed. This was actually quite time consuming, since each 'piece' is a perfectly shaped transparent tif set onto the white piece of backing paper color. I also did some photoshop work to edit the doll and other proportions plus tweak color.
This was the first version of the doll insert that did make it through to the 1st proof stage. Then, suddenly, some people felt our joke went too far. The issue's theme was waste and trash, so the idea was to lampoon white trashy fashion. I always go for more sensationalism if at all possible (to get people talking), so it was my suggestion to make her pregnant on top of it. The gun cracks me up. Again, the illustrator really went for it – which is exactly what I wanted to see. haha. The whole process of getting this insert to print was somewhat stressful. This over the top version never made it to final print.
